Better Than Free
In a real sense, these are eight things that are better than free. Eight uncopyable values. I call them "generatives." A generative value is a quality or attribute that must be generated, grown, cultivated, nurtured. A generative thing can not be copied, cloned, faked, replicated, counterfeited, or reproduced. It is generated uniquely, in place, over time. In the digital arena, generative qualities add value to free copies, and therefore are something that can be sold.

Wordpress was next, kind of...

Von roger @ 03:11 [ Blogging ]
I lately mused about who is next (after the SUN-MySQL deal) and pointed to Wordpress. Well it was not yet a full cash out, but kind of mix of B-round/cash out. Still funny;) Matt, did it happen on the 18th?

Automattic (owner of Wordpress) has raised $29.5 million Series B funding
Matt stopped by to see Om to talk about things and in doing so, intentionally or unintentionally shared that the company raised a round of funding led by TrueVentures. The round included a strategic investment from The New York Times Co, which is indicative of NYT’s commitment to exploring and building its Social Media foundation.

Update: As part of this funding, some insiders including senior management whose options had vested were given an opportunity to cash out. The Wall Street Journal reports:
“Still, Automattic’s investors are taking pains to keep the company’s founders motivated: Some of the $29 million will be used to help company founders and others cash out some of their holdings in the private company, Mr. Black said. The practice has become more common in Silicon Valley as start-up founders spend longer building their companies without any payday.”

QR Code for the Song: Cabeça de Nego (remix) / Instituto & Sabotage

The QR Code points to the song Cabeça de Nego (remix) from the São Paulo Label Instituto. It's only about 40 seconds into the song (MP3 / 700 KB / 40 sec.).

Currently I point to the MP3 on the japanese site of Utakata Records, but hopefully I get an answer to my mail from Instituto, so that I can host it here directly. I'll keep you updated.

Dissecting the iPhone: What to do better next time

Von roger @ 15:07 [ Diverses ]
Two-pane email client by Ryan Block.

I think Ryan's post shows the future for products like the iPhone, in that even a "perfect" product can be improved. The post is extremely valuable in my opinion, because it addresses a small detail and offers a way to improve it. And by adding photos it makes it also easy to understand. Very good job, Ryan.

Steve Jobs attitude as God of consumer electronics has worked very well so far. However even Apple cannot continue with this "we are infallible / no transparency" attitude for eternity. Why not aggregate this small incremental change posts like Ryan's one on the Apple iPhone site itself and let them rate by other iPhone customers?

The iPhone is great, but it could be better - like almost everything. And maybe this explains also that around Christmas time there were proportionally a lot of iPhone users accessing the internet, but already in January this dropped again. Explanation: everybody which bought an iPhone around Christmas time or got it as a gift, tried it out. It was cool during the first weeks, but will it continue to be cool for the next months?

Side question: Does Android first need some similar marketshare till Steve changes his ways?

PS:
Kaywa does certainly want to go into this direction. But it will take some time till we get there, as it needs a complete makeover of current processes.

MySQL bought by SUN

What does this show? The incumbents (Yahoo / Sun) join and acquire because they have to.

And who's next? Wordpress? How much value does Wordpress have?

China: Internet Population and Ad Market

Von roger @ 09:38 [ Diverses ]
China Closes In on U.S. As Largest Web Market
[via Techcrunch] The state-owned China Internet Network Information Center said that China’s total number of Internet users rose 53% to 210 million at the end of 2007 up from 137 million at the end of 2006 and 162 million in June 2007. According to the WSJ, China is now just five million users shy of surpassing the United States as the world’s largest Internet market.

In NZZ today, China's no2 worldwide regarding advertisement:
