Designing Social Interfaces (Wiki > Book)

Von roger @ 21:36 [ Web 2.0, Mash-Ups ... ]
Designing Social Interfaces Wiki
The Designing Social Interfaces patterns wiki is a companion site to the book that Christian Crumlish and Erin Malone are currently writing for O'Reilly Media.

We decided to share the patterns as we write the patterns and the book to get community feedback. We think that hearing a variety of opinions about these topics will make the material stronger and more representative of what's happening in social interfaces. As we complete sections of the book, we will be adding the patterns.

If you choose to contribute, we ask that you don't delete sections out right, but rather add your information with attribution. We want to incorporate contributions into the final book material and would like to know who contributed what. Every page has a discussion tab for conversations about the topic.

We look forward to talking with you!

APML - Attention Profiling Markup Language

Von roger @ 15:46 [ Web 2.0, Mash-Ups ... ]
AMPL
APML allows you to share your own personal Attention Profile in much the same way that OPML allows the exchange of reading lists between News Readers. The idea is to compress all forms of Attention Data into a portable file format containing a description of your ranked interests.

Marjolein Hoekstra
Attention profile sources
Though not an exhaustive list, your attention profile could be based on:
  • pages you bookmark and tags you assign
  • your favorite videos, music and TV shows
  • hyperlinks you follow and share with your friends
  • things you write about and topics you keep track of
  • items you click on in your feed reader
  • things you buy from a web store
  • places you visit and events you attend

Visualizing Social Software Best Practices by R/WW

Visualizing Social Software Best Practices: Three Approaches
It's an exciting time in social media and design is a big part of that. There's an infinite horizon in design alone but also factors like Adobe's AIR and Thermo, not to mention the thrillingly tiny mobile world. The new web is supposed to be all about democratized participation (you can not only Read, you can Write to it too!) and usability will be an important part of making it not just sustainable but helping the web really live up to its potential.

Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship
Social network sites (SNSs) are increasingly attracting the attention of academic and industry researchers intrigued by their affordances and reach. This special theme section of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication brings together scholarship on these emergent phenomena. In this introductory article, we describe features of SNSs and propose a comprehensive definition. We then present one perspective on the history of such sites, discussing key changes and developments. After briefly summarizing existing scholarship concerning SNSs, we discuss the articles in this special section and conclude with considerations for future research.

PS: Google's OpenSocial and (update) Tim's answer to it: Mark Cuban, Facebook, and OpenSocial.

Microformats Operator

Microformats Operator

Operator demonstrates the usefulness of semantic information on the Web, in real world scenarios.
and on Michael Kaply's blog
In creating Operator my goals were to create something that was useful to microformat developers as well as users looking to explore microformats. As such, the Operator Toolbar can be displayed in two modes: Microformats mode and Actions mode.

Via Alex Faaborg. (PS: I had time to read his interesting entries about Microformats on the road with Feed2Mobile. I probably would never have read them fully on a computer.)
